Q. Dear Catherine,
My boyfriend refuses to kiss me sometimes because he hates that my lipstick rubs off on him. What can I do to avoid getting it on him?
--Gerri, Moose Jaw

Hi Gerri,
Fortunately there are a few strategies you can do to avoid the rub off such as wearing a clear lip balm over top of the lipstick to try and conceal colour, or blotting with a tissue to take off as any excess you may have. Another option is to choose a lipstick that is specifically designed to have staying power, or choose a lighter matte shade that he may not notice as much. Lately, I’ve been testing the new full finish lipsticks from Benefit and I’m noticing that it stays on well despite "friction." It comes in 3 shades, "Lady’s Choice," "Passionista" and "Thrillin’ Brazilian." You may want to give one of them a try also.

Q. Hi Catherine,
Is it okay to wear makeup when I work out at the gym?
--Keri, Red Deer

Hi Keri,
According to dermatologists there is nothing wrong with wearing make-up when you are at the gym, but you want to alter what you do wear to avoid any make-up faux pas. For instance, this would be a great place to wear waterproof mascara. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to have any mishaps getting sweat in your eyes and having your mascara run. I also advise that if you rub your face a lot when you work out, you may want to use minimal foundation and powder as well. Otherwise you may get some weird looks from your gym peers when your towel is make-up clad. Lastly, when your workout is complete, it is necessary to cleanse your face to prevent pimples due to perspiration.

Q. Dear Catherine,
No matter what type of hand cream I use, my hands are always rough and cracking. What do you recommend?
--Jessica, Stratford

Hi Jessica,
My two top product picks to mitigate dry hand problems are Crabtree and Evelyn LaSource Hand Therapy and Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Intensive Hand Moisturizing treatment. These products are specially formulated to provide intense hand hydration and relief from cracking and flaking skin. The key with any hand hydration program is to keep re-applying. Due to elements and over exposure to water, we continually need moisturize to attain and maintain softer and younger looking skin.
