Christopher Turner tracks Beyoncé's style transformation from a girl group standout to a bonafide diva

Beyoncé Knowles began her rise to stardom as a founding member and the lead singer of one of the most successful female trios - Destiny's Child. After a series of commercially successful records with the girls, she released her debut solo album, made a foray into acting and even launched her own fashion line called the House of Dereon.

Whether she’s acting or singing, one thing remains consistent - she is a style standout. Through the years Beyoncé’s style has evolved right alongside her career. Her fashion choices are always daring as crossover tops, plunging necklines, miniskirts and fabrics that either sparkle or shine, show off her voluptuous figure as she performs or walks down the red carpet.

Here’s a look back at some of Beyoncé’s most memorable fashion moments:

Child of Destiny
March 26, 1999
Destiny's Child formed in the early 90s with Beyoncé Knowles, LaTavia Roberson, Kelly Rowland, and LeToya Luckett (joining in 1993). By 1997 the girls had signed with Columbia Records and Knowles’ dad, who represented the quartet, began to move the group beyond the local Houston music scene and toward wide-scale fame. Here Beyoncé leads the girls down the red carpet at the 13th annual Soul Train Music Awards wearing matching purple outfits designed by her mom, Tina Knowles.

Lady in Red
January 21, 2001
A year before she made her movie début in Austin Powers Goldmember, she was the lady in red at the Golden Globes. Covering the event with Chris Connelly MTV's Buck Wild at the Golden Globe Awards, she smoldered on the red carpet in a slinky, glittery, red gown, with a sexy thigh-high slit. Her multi-toned, long curly hair added an additional va va voom factor.

Tied Up

Beyoncé is part of a long line of celebs with a connection to the house of Versace. At the 2003 MTV Movie awards, Beyoncé sashayed down the red carpet in this stunning, shimmery, olive green gown which featured an exquisite light green satin criss-crossed corset across the front.

Solid Gold

For her electric performance at the 2003 MTV Video music awards, Beyoncé made her entrance by dangling from the ceiling. She began with a performance of Baby Boy and segued into her first solo hit, Crazy in Love. The transition from the first song to the next was accompanied by her stripping down to flashy gold hot shorts, top and of course a fur stole.

Prince Charming

Beyoncé won five Grammy Awards in 2004 including Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, but it was her opening performance that stood out. Beyoncé opened the show with Prince singing a medley of his hits (as well as her own Crazy in Love). For her show-stopping opening number the diva wore a tight dress with a feather skirt that revealed a pair of pink panties.

Back in Black

Beyoncé arrived on Oscar’s red carpet wearing a stunning strapless black vintage velvet Versace gown, proving you can’t go wrong wearing black. Although the singer kept changing costumes for each of her multiple performance that evening, one thing didn’t change — her oversized jeweled chandelier earrings, designed by Lorraine Schwartz.

Big Night Out

Now a fully formed diva, Beyoncé looked ultra-glamorous in her 2006 Grammy ensemble. The singer/actor wore a strapless, body hugging, beaded, champagne-flavored dress with a flattering satin bustline. She topped off her look with her hair pulled back in an adorable I Dream of Jeannie style ponytail.

Déjà Vu

Beyoncé finally acts her age (25) when she showed up at the MTV Times Square studios to introduce the video for Déjà vu, the début single off her second solo album. The singer, whose next solo album will be released this fall, appeared looking youthful and casual in a short dark skirt and top with red belt and matching red glove.

BET Awards

For her strut down the red carpet at the annual BET award ceremony at LA’s Shrine Auditorium, Beyoncé decided to change things up in this uber-glitzy Dolce & Gabbana number. The body hugging gown and the silver corset belt was certainly a departure from her usual couture style. Thankfully it was only for one night.

The American Music Awards

Beyoncé arrived for the 35th annual American Music Awards looking fab as always in a mermaid-style gown from her own label, House of Dereon. The singer stole the red carpet and brought new meaning to the word “Bootylicious” in this figure-hugging gold satin gown. The style may be a standard for the Diva. But hey if it ain’t broke…don’t fix it.

Another show-stopping number for Beyoncé was the stunning Elie Saab couture gown she wore on the red carpet at the 2008 Grammy Awards. The pale blue tulle gown with its asymmetrical bodice and metallic details ensured she made every fashion editors best dressed list.

Even though she ignored the superheroes theme and dress code, Beyoncé arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art looking absolutely gorgeous. Wearing a muted pink strapless Giorgio Armani gown, the red carpet diva pulled off subtle glamour in the stunning dress that features ruffles down the front and a flowing train. Beautiful.
